Full-Function Version of Net Perceptions Recommendation Engine
To Be Included in StoryServer 5.0 Platform Product
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Net Perceptions Inc. (Nasdaq: NETP) today announced that it has signed an agreement with Vignette Corporation (Nasdaq: VIGN) to embed a full-function version of the Net Perceptions Recommendation Engine with Vignette's StoryServer(TM) platform product.
The agreement significantly enhances the partnership between Net Perceptions, the leading supplier of realtime personalization solutions, and Vignette, the leading provider of e-business platform and application software, by adding the Net Perceptions Recommendation Engine as a complete feature.
Since mid-1998, Vignette has embedded a limited-function Net Perceptions Recommendation Engine with Vignette's StoryServer platform product. Now, the complete Net Perceptions Recommendation Engine will be available in Vignette's StoryServer 5.0 platform product, with general availability of the product expected next month. Further, Vignette will provide the Recommendation Engine to all customers who upgrade previous versions of the StoryServer platform product.
"We are extremely excited about this new agreement," said Steven Snyder, president and CEO of Net Perceptions. "With analysts projecting that Vignette will add 500 new customers in 2000, our partnership substantially extends the Net Perceptions customer base. The embedding of our realtime Recommendation Engine with the StoryServer platform product will enable all Vignette customers to immediately begin taking advantage of our technology in their applications, thereby enabling them to deliver an unprecedented personalized experience to each of their users."
Greg Peters, president and CEO of Vignette, said, "We believe that the addition of the Net Perceptions Recommendation Engine to the StoryServer platform product gives Vignette a significant competitive advantage in the e-business platform market. In the past 12 months, personalization has moved from buzzword to business-critical. With the Net Perceptions Recommendation Engine embedded in our StoryServer platform product, Vignette is leapfrogging competitors by offering a more complete solution to every customer."
Personalization Is Business-Critical
According to a recent study by Nielsen//NetRatings, sites that offer collaborative filtering-based recommendation engines enjoy a much higher conversion rate than non-personalized sites. Amazon.com and Drugstore.com had conversion rates of 8.3 percent and 7.9 percent in August, while sites such as Reel.com and J. Crew lagged with conversion rates of 3.5 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively. Further, the study found that personalized content appears to be the important factor -- with price not playing as much of a significant role in distinguishing the most successful e-merchants from their competitors.
"Personalization significantly increases a site's customer loyalty and the conversion of browsers into buyers," Snyder said. "Personalization is a competitive imperative. E-commerce companies not only have to communicate to their customers on a personalized one-to-one basis, but they have to do it well."
